  • red berries

A project from my Wintersession 1999 class, Installation Art
I did this installation project on a riverside park pier, in Providence, RI.  I gathered berries that had dropped to the ground from trees that were along the inland side of the pier. It took roughly an hour to gather enough berries to lay out two full rows, and it took roughly another hour to lay them out. I usually collected in the late afternoon right before sunset, and usually laid them out right after sunrise early in the morning.  Each day I laid out a double row aligned to a tree, and I was able to complete four double rows until the snow accumulated and impeded me from doing more. The little stems of the red berries were facing down into the cracks between the weathered, gray boards. They stayed in place pretty well, unless heavy rain, wind, or people’s footsteps moved them. The rows started to be visible again a few days later as the snow begins to melt, and amazingly most of them had stayed in place during all the bad weather.  There was a meditative quality experienced in the act of making this piece.  Nature's unpredictable role in the performance allowed me to be not only the artist but also the audience.
